Mother Installs Jail Cell At Home To Protect Herself From Addicted Son

In a desperate attempt to protect herself from her drug and gambling-addicted son, a Thai woman installed an iron jail cell inside her home in Buriram Province. After living in fear for over 20 years and watching her son become increasingly violent, she told police she felt she had no choice but to create a secure space. “For twenty years, I’ve lived in constant fear,” the mother, identified as Mrs. A. shared, explaining that her late husband’s stress over their son’s addiction contributed to his death. She made sure her son’s cell had essential amenities like a bed, bathroom, WiFi, and a small opening to deliver food and water.

Her unusual measure has raised concern among local authorities, who informed her that the homemade jail cell might violate human rights and even Article 310 of Thailand’s Criminal Code, which addresses unlawful detention. Despite this, Mrs. A. felt the cell was the only way to keep both herself and her neighbors safe, as her son’s repeated attempts at rehabilitation had failed. Police have since instructed her to dismantle the cell, promising to find alternative ways to address her safety concerns, and her story has sparked international attention, shedding light on Thailand’s growing drug addiction crisis.
