DONALD TRUMP: Executive Order Targets Social Media

Trump isn't backing down from his threat to crack down on social media outlets for what he sees as illegal censorship.

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • This is a temper tantrum, pure and simple.
  • This EO is designed to try to get some leverage over Twitter and Facebook. Opening them up to lawsuits isn't likely to promote more free speech.
  • Some analysts think the person who would actually get hurt the most by this, if it actually held up in court, is Trump himself. If companies think political speech could get them sued, they simply won't allow it at all. And what would Trump do without Twitter?
  • Mark Zuckerberg has said that social media shouldn't be fact-checking political content.
  • Socials have become public utilities like electric and gas companies. They should be under some kind of government oversight.

Trump isn't backing down from his threat to crack down on social media outlets for what he sees as illegal censorship.

Trump signed an executive order (Thursday) that in theory would make it easier to sue firms such as Twitter and Facebook. The order, which experts say is unlikely to hold up under legal scrutiny, comes in response to Twitter's decision to tag two Trump tweets with a "fact check" message.

The President told reporters today that he believes social media outlets unfairly censor conservative voices

Trump has been fuming after Twitter tagged two of his posts pertaining to mail-in voting and election fraud, including a link to news items showing that there is no evidence of widespread fraud. (NBC News)
