Scientists Develop Lickable VR Device For Tasting Foods On TV

Researchers at City University of Hong Kong have created a groundbreaking device that lets users experience taste in virtual reality. Shaped like a lollipop, the portable device uses food-grade chemicals and electrical currents to mimic flavors such as cherry, green tea, milk, grapefruit and more. “Taste significantly influences both the physiological and psychological aspects of human experience,” the researchers explained, highlighting the potential for this invention to revolutionize VR experiences by adding a new sensory dimension.

The lollipop device, combines taste with a smell simulator for a complete multi-sensory experience. It could allow viewers to taste dishes while watching cooking shows or even sample food products before buying them. Though the technology is still in its early stages, with a limited flavor range and gels that only last about an hour, the potential applications include remote shopping, medical assessments, and interactive education. Researchers are already working on improving the device, aiming to expand with more flavors and enhance durability.
