Farmer Uses Drone To Get Critical Supplies To Hurricane Survivors

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, delivering supplies to people in need in western North Carolina has become difficult due to hundreds of road closures caused by the storm. However, innovative individuals like Surry County farmer Preston Cave are stepping in to help with creative solutions. He and several other drone operators are using drones to transport critical supplies to areas that are otherwise inaccessible.

Cave explains that some people had requested helicopters for supply deliveries, but drones have proven to be a better option for certain locations. His team has repurposed agricultural drones, originally designed for tasks like spraying crops and planting seeds, to carry supplies into hard-to-reach areas. They have even modified shopping carts to attach to the drones with long ropes for easier transport.

The farmer and his group of four or five drone operators are dedicated to doing whatever they can to help those affected by the hurricane. Explaining his motivation for helping, Cave says, “If my girls were hungry, I would want them fed.”
