Mel B Gives Update After Suffering Temporary Blindness Amid Health Scare

"America's Got Talent" Season 13 Live Show Red Carpet

Mel B is opening up about the health scare that caused her to temporarily lose her eyesight.

The Spice Girls member was hospitalized last week after she'd supposedly gone "totally blind" after something rendered her unable to see with her right eye. An insider told the Daily Mail, "Mel was frantic and screaming that she couldn't see a thing," and therefore was rushed to London's Moorfields Eye Hospital on Friday (May 17).

After undergoing treatment, a spokeswoman for the 43-year-old told the publication Mel's situation was "under control."

Now, Mel, who is recovering from the episode, took to Instagram Tuesday (May 21) to speak about what actually happened.

“Just so you know the real truth. I had an awful experience last week when I went blind in my right eye and my left eye went blurry,” Scary Spice along with a black-and-white image of her sporting an eye patch. “… just to be clear I was NOT ok and this has NEVER EVER happened to me before … I was actually in a lot of pain and very very scared but thanks to the incredible eye specialists in A&E at London’s Moorfields Hospital and after at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital I was diagnosed by and eye specialist with severe IRITIS in my right eye and UVEITIS in my left eye.”

These conditions are characterized as the inflammation of the iris of the eye, and can also cause redness, pain and blurred vision, as Mel described in her account. She lost vision in her left eye 20 years ago after a botched laser surgery.

Thankfully, "multiple prescription heavy duty eye drops and other medication" are keeping the inflammation at bay, though Mel says the condition may not go away for another 3-4 four months.

As of yet, the singer is still expected to embark on the Spice Girls reunion tour starting May 24.

Get well, Mel!
