Indiana State Trooper Shot By 11-Year-Old Son After Taking Away Video Games

11-year-old shot trooper dad as he slept for taking video games away, court docs say

An 11-year-old Indiana boy has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting his father for taking away his video games.

Indiana State Trooper Matt Makowski was shot last month by his son on Feb. 22. Police discovered Makowski with a gunshot wound to the pelvic area and brought him to the hospital where he underwent surgery.

The 11-year-old was taken into custody by police after a brief investigation revealed evidence that he was the one who allegedly shot Makowski. According to the incident report, the boy told officers that he was angry that his parents had taken his video games away and had devised a plan because he was “done with all that” and “wanted it to end.”

Makowski told police that he believes his son retrieved the firearm from his vehicle which is parked outside their home. The boy said he went to his father’s car three times to look for the gun. After finding the firearm in his father’s car, the boy went into his parent’s bedroom with the gun and waited for “about ten minutes” before his dad rolled over and was facing away from the door so he wouldn’t see him and shot his father, according to court documents. When Makowski began screaming, his wife went to look for the 11-year-old and saw him going up the stairs with a gun and Taser.

The boy allegedly told police that he wanted a Playstation, an Xbox and a computer or else there would be a “part 2.” Court documents say the boy also told police he wanted to shoot his father in the head, but couldn't because of the way he was laying down.

The boy is facing charges in juvenile court of attempted murder. The 11-year-old is scheduled for another Juvenile court appearance on April 10.

Investigators say Makowski has been steadily improving since being shot.
